They Execute the Transaction, and They Go Away

Most wealthy clients don’t leave their private banker over performance. They leave because no one ever really listened. A stranger handed me that insight on a flight a year before we built WMAI — and it’s the reason this program exists.

A conversation at 35,000 feet

A year before we built WMAI’s private banking certification program, I was on a flight from London to Hyderabad, seated next to someone I’d never met. Small talk turned into a two-hour conversation — the kind that, I’ve learned, sometimes throws up a lot of ideas, and sometimes throws up some hard facts.

It turned out my seatmate wasn’t just any passenger. He splits his time between London and Hyderabad, where he’s developing a project on the scale of Dubai’s Jumeirah — exactly the kind of client every private bank wants on its books.

When the conversation turned to relationship managers and private bankers, he said something that has stayed with me ever since:

“Most of them reach out to me, they execute the transaction, and they go away.”

The problem hiding in plain sight

It wasn’t a complaint about products, pricing, or performance. It was simpler — and harder to fix. He wanted a banker who would listen, who could see things from his point of view, who showed up as more than a transaction processor.

I took that question to the industry itself — seasoned private bankers with decades in the relationship business. Their answer confirmed what my seatmate had already told me in his own words: something in how this industry is built makes real client connection a matter of luck, not design.

That reframe became the founding question behind WMAI’s Certified Private Banker program:

“How can we, by design, be connected to the customer? Not by luck or by accident?”

Built around the voice of the customer

Instead of designing a private banking curriculum around products or sales technique, I built WMAI around a single premise: every decision should be made through the lens of the client, not the bank. That’s the genesis of our Certified Private Banker (CPB) certification — a program built directly from client feedback and the real, unfiltered experience of seasoned private bankers, not a generic sales playbook.

Why this matters if you're a client — or a banker

If you’re evaluating a private banker for your own wealth, the lesson from this story is a useful filter: does this person disappear after the transaction closes, or do they stay engaged? And if you’re a private banker or wealth manager, it’s a mirror — the client on the other side of the table is quietly asking the same question my seatmate asked me on that flight.

Frequently Asked Question

Why do wealthy clients leave their private bankers?
Most often, it isn’t performance — it’s disengagement. Clients frequently report that their banker executes the transaction and then disappears, rather than staying present as a long-term advisor who understands their perspective.

WMA (Wealth Management Academy) is a venture founded by Chandan RoyChoudhury, focused on wealth education in India and purpose-built for the private banking space. Its flagship offering is the Certified Private Banker (CPB) program, designed around real client feedback rather than product-led training.

The idea originated from a chance conversation on a flight, where a high-net-worth individual told WMA founder Chandan RoyChoudhury that most bankers “execute the transaction, and they go away” — highlighting a gap in genuine client connection across the private banking industry.

Rather than centering training on products or sales pitches, WMA’s program is designed around the client’s perspective — asking how private bankers can be reliably connected to their clients’ needs “by design,” not by chance.
