What Is the Certified Private Banker Program Like? WMA Participants Share Their Experience
What does it really take to develop from a relationship manager into a more strategic private banking advisor?
The curriculum can tell you what a program covers. But sometimes, the clearest perspective comes from the professionals who have experienced the learning themselves.
Participants from the first WM Academy Certified Private Banker cohort recently completed their learning journey, combining structured learning with live sessions, practical exercises, peer discussions and in-person application.
These first-hand accounts offer a closer look at the learning experience and what the journey meant to the private banking professionals who took part.

Reflecting on the Learning Journey
For experienced professionals, development is not simply about acquiring more information. It is also about challenging existing approaches, learning from different perspectives and finding ways to bring those insights back into everyday client conversations.
In the video above, Venkata Gowtham Chidipothu reflects on his experience in the first Certified Private Banker cohort.
The broader program is designed around the realities of private banking, bringing technical knowledge together with client understanding, communication and relationship skills.

Taking Learning Beyond the Classroom
Private banking requires more than knowing products, markets and portfolio strategies. Every client brings a different set of priorities, concerns, family circumstances and expectations into the conversation.
In the video above, Rohan Basak offers a first-hand perspective on completing the program. His reflection gives prospective participants another way to consider how structured learning relates to their own client conversations and professional development.

Building the Private Banker Mindset
Becoming a stronger private banker is not necessarily about replacing everything a professional already knows.
Often, it is about sharpening how that knowledge is applied – how clients are understood, how questions are asked, how recommendations are communicated and how relationships are developed over time.
In his participant story, Swaminathan Gopalan shares his perspective on completing the Certified Private Banker journey and being part of WMA’s first cohort.

More Than Technical Knowledge
One theme behind the Certified Private Banker program is that private banking cannot be reduced to technical knowledge alone.
The WMA Certified Private Banker curriculum combines areas such as client psychology, discovery conversations, portfolio advisory, wealth strategy, executive presence, family and legacy conversations, and practical client simulations. The program uses a 12-week hybrid structure with self-paced learning, live workshops and in-person application.
For working professionals, that distinction matters.
A private banker may understand markets and investment products well, but the client experience also depends on whether the banker can understand what sits behind a client’s question, communicate complex ideas clearly and build confidence through the conversation.
This is why the learning journey places application alongside knowledge.
Learning From the Cohort as Well as the Classroom
The experience is also shaped by the people going through it together.
Participants bring their own client situations, professional experience and perspectives into the program. Discussions, simulations and peer learning create opportunities to examine how other professionals approach similar challenges.
For the first cohort, that meant the learning did not remain confined to presentations or course material. It continued through conversations between participants, practical exercises and the exchange of experiences throughout the journey.
The result is a learning environment where participants can connect structured frameworks with situations they already encounter as wealth and private banking professionals.
What Does the WMA Certified Private Banker Program Cover?
The Certified Private Banker program by WM Academy is designed for professionals looking to strengthen their capabilities in HNI and UHNI advisory.
- Foundation and Private Banker Mindset: Understanding the private banking landscape, HNI client psychology and the mindset required to operate as a strategic advisor.
- Client Engagement and Trust Building: Developing discovery conversations, prospecting discipline, executive presence and approaches to building stronger client relationships.
- Wealth Strategy and Advisory: Translating portfolio thinking into client conversations, navigating periods of market uncertainty and discussing family, legacy and longer-term wealth priorities.
- Client Conversion and Advisory Mastery: Strengthening strategic conversations, objection handling, portfolio presentation and the ability to apply learning in practical situations.
WMA currently describes the Certified Private Banker program as a 12-week hybrid program with more than 100 hours of learning, combining asynchronous study, live Zoom workshops and in-person immersion.
Who Is the Certified Private Banker Program For?
The program is designed primarily for professionals who already have financial-services or client-facing experience and want to deepen their private banking capabilities.
That includes relationship managers working with affluent clients, wealth managers serving HNI clients, senior advisors and professionals looking to move further into private banking or strategic wealth advisory.
Rather than focusing only on what a private banker needs to know, the program places significant emphasis on how that knowledge is used in front of a client – including client psychology, discovery, trust building, advisory communication, portfolio conversations and practical simulations.
From the First Cohort to the Next Journey
These reflections from WMA’s first Certified Private Banker cohort offer something a curriculum alone cannot: a view of the program through the eyes of the professionals who experienced it.
And for the next group of private banking professionals, a new journey begins this November 2026.
